irrealism | surrealism and the lyric essay
Three 1.5- to 2-hour sessions exploring irrealism, surrealism, and the lyric essay. With an optional 4th class/workshop. This is, for me, the most important area of exploration in my own writing, and benefits from the other classes of this summer. We’ll talk about how to take our own lives as the baseline for significant imaginative leaps—hybridizing our lives as fiction in a sense, but really just telling deeper truths. Topics include: Just what is the truth? Lacan’s Master Signifier; allowance (letting go) and substance (the Crux, Attractor, etc.); pushing away, wandering, and the creative use of Negative Capability as genuine realism, imprints/exprints, ekphrastic techniques beyond the image, improvisational pressure (yes, and…), transcendental reality, and more….
