Three 1.5- to 2-hour sessions on the art of revision. With an optional 4th class/workshop. We’ll cover overarching formal considerations and discuss how to draw interest outward from good ideas, narrative energy / fighting lag, (re)generation, plot vs. story, story vs. anecdote, extreme sentence level work, including distillation, selective subtraction / amplification, syntax and word choice, tonal variety, ekphrastic techniques that go beyond image description, keeping only ‘good’ sentences, sentence as plot, voice, emphasizing color and action only, metaphor and plot, metaphor and the sentence, metaphor and dialogue (including a whole section on dialogue beyond this), and more…
